Use the real market price as the baseline
Manufacturer suggested retail price can overstate the savings shown on a used, open-box, or refurbished listing. Compare against the price a reputable retailer is charging today for the same model, configuration, and bundle. Seasonal promotions, coupons, included gift cards, and free accessories can make a new offer cheaper than it first appears.
The baseline should include known shipping and mandatory fees before tax. If the alternative requires a replacement charger, battery, mounting kit, or filter, add that cost before deciding that the non-new offer is cheaper.
Verify warranty eligibility
A product can be physically new but ineligible for the manufacturer's warranty when it was imported, resold by an unauthorized merchant, previously registered, or separated from the original proof of purchase. Check who provides the warranty and whether the serial number, seller, region, and purchase channel satisfy the written terms.
- Manufacturer, retailer, seller, or third-party warranty
- Authorized-seller requirement
- Original receipt and registration deadline
- Regional voltage, radio, and service eligibility
Compare the complete retail package
New listings may still differ. One may be a bare tool, another a starter kit, and another a retailer-exclusive bundle. Electronics can vary by memory, generation, color, included subscription, or regional adapter. Use model numbers and package contents rather than broad product names.
When installation is expensive, the value of a complete package and immediate replacement availability increases. A missing bracket or incompatible valve can cost more than the discount on an alternative-condition item.
When new condition earns the premium
New condition is most valuable when an early failure would create high labor, downtime, safety, data-loss, or return-shipping costs. It can also be the better choice when batteries degrade with age, software support is tied to generation, hygiene matters, or the product will be given as a gift.
- Complex electronics and networked devices
- Products requiring professional installation
- Safety-critical tools, fixtures, and appliances
- Items with expensive proprietary accessories
