Used power tools can deliver excellent value because many professional-grade tools remain serviceable long after cosmetic wear appears. They can also hide expensive problems in batteries, bearings, gearboxes, switches, chargers, cords, and safety components. The inspection should match the tool type and the cost of a failure rather than relying on appearance alone.

Date codes, cycle information, and diagnostic lights are useful when available, but physical safety takes priority.

Before buying, price common failure parts and check whether the tool is economically serviceable. A low purchase price loses its advantage when a proprietary battery, switch, chuck, base plate, or control board costs nearly as much as a complete working tool.
